WASHINGTON  In the wake of increased security at all federal buildings related to terrorists events in Europe and elsewhere, Commercial Window Shield has completed a glass protection project at the James Forrestal Building on Independence Avenue.

Previously, in 1998, Commercial Window Shield installed clear security film on all 3,300 panes of glass in the building, headquarters for the U.S. Department of Energy.

The new, unique project focused on securing 86 massive windows in the building’s ground-level cafeteria, which seats 600. Although the glass was already protected, DOE wanted a different type of film installed to block visibility into the cafeteria so it would not be obvious 600 people were sitting in one place eating lunch.

During several site visits, Commercial Window Shield engineers installed multiple samples of exterior and interior security windows films. The company worked with DOE to determine the correct combination of appearance, effectiveness and visibility for the new film. The decision was then made to remove the existing clear security film from the windows and install a highly reflective, mirrored film with a wet glaze attachment system. In all, 5,000 square feet of glass was protected.

Adding to the challenge, Commercial Window Shield was given two weeks to complete the project. Because company installers carried Homeland Security-issued badges from their work in other federal government buildings, they were allowed to work at night without a DOE security escort. As usual, the project was completed on time to the satisfaction of DOE.

Commercial Window Shield is the country’s largest installer of shatter resistant and solar control window films.  Among the hundreds of projects the company has completed in its 30 years are the U.S. Capitol; all House of Representative and Library of Congress buildings; Pentagon; FBI, DOJ, VA, DEA and HHS headquarters; Grand Central Terminal; Merrill Lynch headquarters, O’Hare International Airport, the Willis Tower [former Sears Tower], the United Nations, and the Philadelphia and Denver mints.
