CWS Smart Film Works
As the design of the modern work space has changed, with the open office and conference room concept firmly in place, the desire to have the option of increased privacy has increased as well.
The development of smart films in recent years by film manufacturers has provided an effective and attractive way for companies to determine when they want an open office concept and when they want privacy.
Smart film, also known as switchable film, is installed on interior glass and has an electrical component that is wired to a light switch. When the switch is on, the film remains clear allowing passersby to see inside. When the switch is off the film becomes opaque, blocking views of the interior and turning the glass into a privacy wall.
Another useful smart film feature: These films are projectable, meaning they can be used as a display screen for viewing power point presentations, videos and other images.
The proven effectiveness of smart film has quickly turned the formerly niche film into a mainstream product that is quickly building market share. The film’s frosted appearance is attractive. And its ability to turn an otherwise visible office or conference room into a private setting with the flip of a switch is a tremendous plus.
Another plus for smart film is it is significantly cheaper than smart glass, another popular privacy product. Although smart glass is effective the cost can be prohibitive and smart film, at a significant savings, is just as effective.
The beauty of the switchable smart film is how it works at the flip of a switch and how it not only adds privacy to an all glass office or conference room but can be used for multiple purposes.
In recent years, Commercial Window Shield has become a leading installer of smart film in office buildings. It’s expertise from years of installing security, solar and decorative films made it an easy transition into the smart film installation market. The company was retained by the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in the nation’s capital to install smart film on all the building’s interior office and conference room windows. The film has an electrical component that is wired to a light switch. When the switch is off, the film remains clear allowing passersby to see inside. When the switch is on a decorative pattern emerges in the film, blocking views of the interior and turning the glass into a privacy wall that also can be used for multimedia presentations.
The busy environment required Commercial Window Shield to develop a flexible, after-hours schedule so as not to intrude in the convention center’s work day. The smart film project was the second project completed by the company for the convention center. Previously, during Phase 1, Commercial Window Shield installed 42,000 sq. ft. of solar control film to correct heat, glare and fading issues with furniture, carpet and artwork. The Phase 1 project included installing 7,500 sq. ft. anti-bird strike film on the L Street bridge corridor, a regular fly-through zone for birds.
It’s clear that increasingly companies will be utilizing the switchable smart film option when considering privacy options in their newly designed offices with glass offices and conference rooms.
