CWS COMPLETES UV SHIELDING FILM PROJECT TO PROTECT RARE BOOKS AT YALE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY
NEW HAVEN, Conn. As part of an 18-month renovation of Yale University’s Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, Commercial Window Shield has completed a UV shielding film project to help protect the library’s collection of more than 180,000 rare books in the building’s central tower.
The clear film, attached to 48 windows, diffuses 99.9 percent of the ultraviolet sun light that comes through the windows but allows natural daylight into the space. As a result, the rare books are protected from solar rays that could cause fading and other damage.
Commercial Window Shield was retained by the renovation project’s contractor, Shawmut Design & Construction of Boston. In the past, Commercial Window Shield has completed similar UV shielding and solar reflective film projects at the National Gallery of Art and Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Torpedo Gallery Art Center in Alexandria, Va., and Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center, in Dowell, Md.
Over its 30 years in security and solar reflective film installation, the company’s work can also be found at the U.S. Capitol, all U.S. House of Representative and Library of Congress buildings, the Denver and Philadelphia mints, Grand Central Terminal and the Willis Tower [former Sears Tower].
