HISTORIC D.C. BUILDING PROTECTED BY CWS
WASHINGTON Commercial Window Shield has completed a security window film project for Vornado/Charles E. Smith on a historic building in the nation’s capitol. The project included a customized approach to preserving and protecting a number of antique, first-floor windows.
The specs, at the Bowen Building, two blocks from the White House at the corner of Eye and 15th streets, called for the installation of 7-mil clear film on 699 windows. GSA recently signed a lease with Vornado for the building’s tenant, the U.S. Department of Treasury, triggering a security upgrade requirement that included window protection.
Built in 1922, the Bowen Building was restored in 2005. Vornado hired Commercial Window Shield because of its ability to handle complex projects on short notice and complete them on time. Phase 1 installing the security film for glass protection was completed on schedule in 18 days.
Phase 2 involved custom building aluminum frames holding Plexiglas and installing them three inches away from the antique, wood framed windows, which could not be altered. The aluminum frames were painted to match the existing wood frames. Phase 2 was completed last week, also on schedule.
Over the past 10 years, Commercial Window Shield has installed shatter resistant window film on more than 35 Vornado buildings in the Washington, D.C. area as part of GSA’s lease renewal security requirements. Vornado/Charles E. Smith is the largest owner/property manager in the national capitol region. The federal government leases space in a number of the company’s 73 Washington-area buildings.
Commercial Window Shield is the country’s largest installer of security and solar control window films. Among the hundreds of projects the company has completed in its 30 years are the U.S. Capitol, all House of Representative and Library of Congress buildings, Pentagon, FBI headquarters, Grand Central Terminal, Merrill Lynch headquarters, O’Hare International Airport, the Willis Tower [former Sears Tower], the United Nations, and the Philadelphia and Denver mints.
