fragment retention film

Veterans Administration

Dept. of Veteran's Affairs
Headquarters Building
810 Vermont Avenue
Washington, DC 20420

May 2003

Commercial Window Shield was awarded a contract to supply and install fragment retention film to all exterior windows in the department of Veteran's Affairs headquarters buildings in Washington, DC.

This building is located in close proximity to the White House. Immediately after the attack of 911, Veterans Affairs contracted with Commercial Window Shield to install fragment retention film on selected areas of the building primarily facing the White House and Lafayette Park. Funding was then applied for to complete the protection of the remainder of the building.

The VA chose to use an ArmorCoat film with a moderate reflective coating. In addition to the blast protection afforded by this product, this film provided energy savings and comfort to the occupants by reducing the heat load entering the building. The film has modernized the look of this building built in 19--(it is an old building).

The VA chose to have the film attached to the window frames using a four-sided structural silicone attachment method. This increases the blast performance of the film system.

The completion of the work involved installing the film and attachment to approximately 3,978 panes of glass while the building was fully occupied. The work was completed in 24 working days and included some weekend work.
