NATURE OF PROJECT
Blast Mitigation
SCOPE OF PROJECT
Supply and install fragment retention film to all exterior-facing glass in two towers.
All film was attached to the window frames with Dow 995 structural silicone [wet-glaze attachment].
TYPE OF FILM INSTALLED
8-mil clear fragment retention film
CHALLENGES
Given the nature of the work carried out at Nuclear Regulatory Headquarters, all Commercial Window Shield installation team members had to complete extensive security clearances. Both towers were fully-occupied during the installation process. To complete the project, 3,567 panes of glass had to be cleaned and filmed, with the film affixed to the glass with structural silicone.
PROJECT DETAILS
Following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, many government agencies scrambled to secure their buildings. In Rockville, Md., about 10 miles from the U.S. Capitol, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) headquarters is housed in twin towers that were on the immediately secure list. Once NRC officials developed a blue print of the scope of the project to secure the towers’ windows, they invited three companies to be involved in the request for proposals process. Commercial Window Shield was awarded the project and completed the work on time, according to the schedule developed by the NRC.
