CWS Wraps Chicago Project at Tallest Building in U.S.

July 08, 2011

CHICAGO - Commercial Window Shield has completed a window security and energy conservation project at the Willis Tower [former Sears Tower] - the tallest building in the United States.

The project involved installing fragment retention solar/security film on 1,020 windows on floors 4-27 in the 108-story building. Commercial Window Shield workers first removed old film from the windows - a painstaking process - before installing a .4-mill solar/security film, which not only protects the windows but creates energy savings for the building.

For the project, Commercial Window Shield utilized an attractive liquid silicone attachment system, which provides added security performance in addition to sealing air infiltration and stopping water leaks.

In June, 2010, two windows were blown out and two others cracked when 80 mph winds struck the building.  Its owners, U.S. Equities Asset Management, realized the building's windows needed to be secured and its occupants and passers-by protected.  Additionally, there were issues with cracked window seals, causing a number of windows to leak.  At the same time, the owners were hoping to benefit from a window film that would not only provide security but energy savings as well.

As a result, they hired Commercial Window Shield, the world's leading installer of solar/security films.

"We were thrilled to get the assignment," said Wayne Staley, Commercial Window Shield's president. "It was a difficult, challenging project, as are many of our assignments. But in the end, as always, we figured it out and we are very pleased with the results."

The Willis Tower project adds to an impressive list of Commercial Window Shield jobs over the past 25 years. They include the U.S. Capitol, House of Representatives, Pentagon, Grand Central Terminal, Merrill Lynch corporate headquarters, O'Hare International Airport and FBI headquarters.
