Challenging Project Completed at Bethesda Metro Center

September 01, 2011

BETHESDA, Md. - Commercial Window Shield has completed a complex and challenging film installation project at the 750,000 sq. ft. Bethesda Metro Center building.

The building's owner, The Meridian Group, had been receiving complaints regarding uncomfortable heat issues from tenants working below the building's atrium. The problem was the sun's reflection off the angled atrium glass. Solar screens, affixed to the atrium glass years earlier, were supposed to handle the problem, but were inadequate.

After other film installation companies declined to get involved, Meridian hired Commercial Window Shield to install 20 percent Silver reflective solar film to the exterior atrium glass. The sloped atrium glass made for a challenging installation process. CWS engineers created a pulley system that allowed installers to repel down the atrium's exterior while secured in individual harnesses.

Before installing the solar film, installers had to remove the old screens. Once the new solar film was installed, the screens were repaired and re-installed over over the film to provide an extra level of protection. The already challenging project was made more difficult as installers worked in an extreme summer heat that impacted the Washington area.

The project was completed on time to the satisfaction of Meridian. Building tenants no longer have a solar heat gain issue and are working in comfort.

Commercial Window Shield is the world’s largest installer of fragment retention and solar reflective window films.  Among the hundreds of projects the company has completed in its 35 years are the U.S. Capitol, House of Representatives, Pentagon, FBI headquarters, Grand Central Terminal, Merrill Lynch headquarters and O’Hare International Airport.
