FBI Install Security Film
The exterior facing glass of the J. Edgar Hoover FBI headquarters building in Washington, DC is protected by security film applied to the interior surface of the glass. Commercial Window Shield was selected as the contractor to perform this work. Commercial Window Shield worked closely with MSC Specialty Films, the manufacturer that produced the film product.
Security film also known as fragment retention film or shatter resistant window film is used to hold the glass together in the event of an explosion. Although the glass may crack and break, the film holds the pieces together as one unit. This minimizes the chance that razor sharp daggers will get propelled through the air toward the building occupants.
The project involved applying security film to the inside surface of some 4,000 panes of glass. The film covers the glass and was then overlapped onto the frame of the window. The film was then "attached" to the window frame using Commercial Window Shield's Blastight Film Attachment System. Securing the film to the window frame creates a stronger system than a daylight application.
