DOE Install Security Film
GSA CONTRACT (GS-07F-0413J) USED TO
MAKE THE PROCUREMEN
The exterior facing glass of the Department of Energy headquarters building The James Forrestal building - in Washington, DC is being protected by security film applied to the interior surface of the glass. Commercial Window Shield was selected as the contractor to perform this work.
The decision to use Commercial Window Shield was easy. They have more experience managing and installing large federal film projects than any other firm. And the fact that they have a GSA contract made the procurement extremely easy. DOE procurement was able to purchase the product and installation directly from schedule, substantially reducing the time, effort and cost normally associated with procuring a job of this size. And since Commercial Window Shield's GSA contract includes many types of glass security products including films, attachment systems, catch bars and catch cable systems, they could easily accommodate differing site conditions.
Security film - also known as fragment retention film (FRF) or shatter resistant window film (SRWF) is used to hold the glass together in the event of an explosion. Although the glass may crack and break, the film holds the pieces together as one unit. This minimizes the chance that razor sharp daggers will get propelled through the air toward the building occupants.
The project involved applying security film to the inside surface of nearly 4,000 panes of glass. The film covers the glass and is then overlapped onto the frame of the window. Most of the work was done by "attaching" the film to the window frame using Commercial Window Shield's Blastight Film Attachment System. Some areas were not suited to the mechanical attachment and were "Wetglazed" attaching the film to the frame using a structural silicone. Securing the film to the window frame creates a stronger system than a daylight application. Both of these applications meet GSA's strict requirement for level C buildings.
Security film is an important and accepted way to protect building occupants from the dangers of flying glass. Please call, fax or e-mail Commercial Window Shield with questions or if you are considering security film for your building. We can offer suggestions,
pricing estimates and samples. If you are interested in this project, or any of our other work please contact us and we will supply you with contact names and phone numbers.
NOTE: this project was procured by DOE using Commercial Window Shield's GSA contract (GS-07F-0413J). This GSA contract allows for the purchase of both materials and installation.
